Privacy Policy
The short version: almost everything you log stays on your phone. Nothing is sold, nothing is advertised against, and there is no analytics or tracking of any kind in this app.
1Who this covers
This policy applies to the DietLift iPhone app and its Apple Watch companion. DietLift is an independent app built and run by a single developer, referred to below as “we”.
2Your account
Creating an account stores your email address, an encrypted form of your password, and a username you choose. This is held by our backend provider, Supabase, which operates the database and sign-in system on our behalf.
Your email address is used to sign you in, to send you a confirmation or password-reset link, and nothing else. We do not send marketing email.
You can use the app without ever contacting the server, but sharing with friends and signing in on a second device both require an account.
3What stays on your phone
Unless you turn on sharing, everything you log lives only in the app's own storage on your device and is never transmitted to us. That includes:
- your food diary, water intake, saved foods and favourites;
- your workouts, sets, weights lifted, and personal records;
- your body weight history, measurements, and goals;
- every photo the app holds — nutrition label photos, product photos, progress photos, and your profile picture. Photos are never uploaded anywhere. Progress photos can additionally be locked behind Face ID.
If you delete the app, this data goes with it. Use the built-in backup export first if you want to keep it.
4What is shared with friends
Sharing is off until you switch it on, and it is granular — diet, workouts, and weight are three separate switches in your profile.
When a switch is on, the relevant days are copied to our database so that people you have accepted as friends can see them. Nobody else can. Access is enforced by database rules that check the friendship exists in both directions, not by the app asking politely.
Turning a switch off stops new data being sent. Removing a friend ends their access.
5Apple Health
If you grant permission, DietLift reads your step count and active energy from Apple Health so it can show them alongside your food, and can write the data you log back to Health. This exchange happens entirely on your device between DietLift and Apple Health. Health data is never sent to our servers and is never shared with friends.
You can revoke this at any time in the iPhone Settings app, under Health, then Data Access & Devices.
6Camera, photos, and microphone
The camera is used to scan barcodes and to photograph nutrition labels. Barcode decoding and label reading both happen on your device; the image is not uploaded.
The microphone is used only when you choose to log food by speaking. To turn speech into text, the app uses Apple's speech recognition, which depending on your device and language may process the audio on Apple's servers under Apple's own privacy policy. We never receive or store the recording.
7Food and exercise lookups
When you scan a barcode or search for a food, the app queries outside databases to find it. A barcode number or a search term is sent; your identity, your account, and your diary are not.
- Open Food Facts — barcode lookups for packaged products.
- USDA FoodData Central — nutrition data for generic foods.
- free-exercise-db — exercise descriptions and images, fetched from a public repository.
The app also offers shopping links for foods you have logged. Tapping one opens that retailer's site in your browser, and from that point their privacy policy applies. No link is followed unless you tap it.
8What we do not do
- No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
- No analytics, crash reporting, or usage tracking. There is no third-party tracking code in the app at all.
- No selling, renting, or sharing of your data with anyone for any commercial purpose.
- No profile building beyond what the app itself shows you.
9Deleting your account
You can delete your account from inside the app, under Profile. This permanently removes your account, your profile, your friendships, and any days you shared, from our database. It cannot be undone.
You may also ask us to delete your data by email, using the address below.
10Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to see a copy of the data we hold about you, to correct it, or to have it erased. The app's own export and delete functions cover all three, and you are welcome to contact us instead.
11Children
DietLift is not directed at children and is not intended for anyone under 16. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we will remove it.
12Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects how your data is handled, the updated version will be posted here with a new date.
